The Dobin Japanese teapot takes the shape of the dobin, the top-handle teapot found on Japanese tables. Made of glazed ceramic, it holds 500 ml and comes in three designs: Ryu (dragon), Kotobuki (gold calligraphy) and Cha (the character for “tea”). Its rattan-style handle lets you lift it without touching the hot ceramic.

  • Glazed ceramic, glossy finish
  • Capacity: 500 ml, around 2 to 3 cups
  • Top handle in rattan style, typical of the Japanese dobin
  • 3 designs: Ryu, Kotobuki and Cha
  • Brewing teapot: heat the water in a kettle
  • 60-day returns, tracked shipping

● The dobin, the Japanese top-handle teapot

In Japan, a dobin is a teapot with a top handle that arches over the lid, often made of rattan or bamboo. This shape is well suited to everyday teas shared at the table. The word even gave its name to dobin mushi, a broth served in a small teapot.

The rattan-style top handle stays away from the body of the teapot, so you can lift it without touching the hot ceramic and pour with a steady hand. Ceramic does not alter the taste of tea and is perfect for green tea as well as herbal infusions.

● Three designs to choose from

  • Ryu (“dragon”): blue dragons among clouds and waves, with touches of red. In Japanese legends, the dragon rules over the waters and the clouds.
  • Kotobuki (“happiness, long life”): black and gold calligraphy and seals on a white background. Among the characters you can read 寿 (long life), 福 (good fortune) and 喜 (joy).
  • Cha (“tea”): a grey floral background, a blue-green border and red-brown rims, around a medallion bearing the character 茶, which means “tea”.

The design names are the ones you choose when ordering.

● Making tea with your Dobin teapot

  1. Warm the teapot with a little hot water, then empty it.
  2. Heat water in a kettle and let it cool to suit your tea: around 70–80 °C for Japanese green tea, 90–95 °C for hojicha or black tea.
  3. Place the leaves in the teapot or in an infuser, pour in the water and brew for the recommended time.
  4. Serve straight away and remove the leaves once the tea has brewed to avoid bitterness.

● Build your Japanese tea set

Pair the Dobin teapot with our 85 ml Japanese teacups: it fills 5 to 6 of them at once, ideal for sharing tea with the family. Discover all our models in the Japanese teapots collection, or give it as a Japanese gift.

● Caring for your teapot

  • Hand washing recommended, in hot water with a soft sponge, to preserve the designs and the handle.
  • Not microwave safe, because of the handle and, for the Kotobuki design, the gold decoration.
  • No direct heat: heat the water in a kettle.
  • Avoid thermal shock: warm the teapot before pouring in very hot water.
  • Dry it thoroughly and store it with the lid open.

● FAQ: Dobin Japanese teapot

What is a dobin teapot?

A dobin is a Japanese teapot recognisable by its top handle, which arches over the lid and is often made of rattan or bamboo. This shape lets you lift the teapot without touching the hot ceramic and pour with a steady hand.

What is the capacity of the Dobin teapot?

The Dobin teapot holds 500 ml, around 2 to 3 regular cups, or 5 to 6 small 85 ml Japanese teacups. It is an ideal size for sharing tea for two or with the family.

Which designs are available?

The Dobin teapot comes in three designs: Ryu, with blue dragons among clouds and waves; Kotobuki, with black and gold calligraphy; and Cha, on a grey floral background with a medallion bearing the character for “tea”.

What do the characters on the teapot mean?

On the Kotobuki design, you can read 寿 (long life), 福 (good fortune) and 喜 (joy), which are traditional wishes. On the Cha design, the character 茶 simply means “tea” and is pronounced cha in Japanese.

Can the Dobin teapot be used on the heat?

No. The Dobin teapot is a ceramic brewing teapot: it cannot go on a flame, a hob or in the microwave. Heat the water in a kettle, then pour it over the leaves.

Is the teapot dishwasher safe?

Hand washing is recommended, in hot water with a soft sponge, to preserve the designs and the rattan-style handle. It is not microwave safe, because of the handle and, for the Kotobuki design, the gold decoration.

Which tea can I brew in a ceramic teapot?

Ceramic does not alter the taste of tea: it suits Japanese green teas such as sencha, roasted teas such as hojicha, black teas and herbal infusions. Remember to adjust the water temperature to each tea.

How is it different from the other Takumiya teapots?

The Dobin is a 500 ml ceramic teapot with a top handle, and it does not go on the heat. The Ume glass teapot and the Nami cast iron teapot can heat water on the heat, while the enamelled cast iron Ishi teapot offers a large 1.2 L capacity.

Is the Dobin teapot a good gift?

Yes. With its Asian-inspired designs and rattan-style handle, the Dobin teapot is a much-loved gift for tea lovers and fans of Japanese culture. Paired with teacups, it becomes a complete tea set.

Can I return the teapot?

Yes. You have 60 days to return your teapot if it is not right for you. Shipping is tracked and our customer support team is happy to answer your questions before and after your order.
